Shining a Light on Bathroom Mirrors. Insights from Sally Bettison, Product Manager
Jun 2025

When designing a dream bathroom, mirrors often serve as a functional necessity, but Sally Bettison, our Product Manager, sees them as so much more. Mirrors are a key element of the bathroom experience, one that has the power to elevate the aesthetic and the functionality of the space. "The right mirror, paired with the right lighting, can transform a bathroom into a space that not only looks incredible but enhances your daily routine," says Sally. "It's about creating an environment where design meets personal wellbeing."
One of the most frequently overlooked aspects of mirror design is the colour temperature of the lighting. From soft, warm glows to bright, cool tones, each light colour serves a unique purpose. Sally has given us her expert insight into this to help us understand how choosing the right light can make a world of difference for your routine and overall bathroom atmosphere.

Understanding Light Colour Temperatures
When it comes to bathroom lighting, the colour of light is measured in Kelvin (K). The lower the Kelvin value, the warmer the light; the higher the value, the cooler and brighter it becomes. Here's a breakdown of how each light temperature works:
- Warm White (2700K–3000K): A soft, golden light that creates a calming ambience.
- Neutral White (4000K): A balanced, natural light that closely mimics daylight.
- Cool White/Daylight (5000K–6500K): A bright, crisp, and slightly blue toned light that provides high visibility, great for performing tasks such as shaving and applying make-up.
Each of these lighting types can dramatically change how a mirror functions, making it essential to understand their impact.
Warm White
Sally explains that warm white lighting is perfect for creating a spa like atmosphere in your bathroom. "This soft, golden light is incredibly flattering on skin tones and ideal for unwinding with a relaxing bath or preparing for bedtime," she shares. "It encourages a sense of calm and relaxation, making it perfect for a guest bathroom or en-suite where the focus is on comfort and luxury."
For those who appreciate a soothing environment, warm white lighting allows you to unwind and ease into the evening, offering a gentle, ambient glow.[ST2] The natural tones of warm white mirrors the sun at the time of day so the warmer glow enhances the production of melatonin the sleep hormone just as the natural sunlight does and also why this is great as a night light in the bathroom too to keep you in a state of sleep for night time bathroom visits.
Neutral White
When it comes to everyday tasks like skincare, shaving, or applying makeup for cooler skin tones or evening make up, neutral white light is the perfect middle ground. "Neutral white lighting is a reflection of natural daylight, in the mornings and afternoons" says Sally. "It provides the best balance, ensuring that what you see in the mirror is true to life." Many restaurants opt for this level of lighting as a reflection of natural daylight.
At Tissino, many of our mirrors are designed with this balance in mind, offering lighting that helps you look and feel your best throughout the day. Neutral white light is versatile, adaptable for any task, and ensures accurate visibility when you're preparing for your day.
Cool White/Daylight
For those moments when precision is key, whether it's for makeup application for warmer skin tones or the daytime, detailed grooming, or getting ready early in the morning, cool white or daylight lighting is the ideal choice. Sally notes, "This bright, crisp light mimics daylight, making it perfect for fine details and giving you the best visibility when you need it the most."
While cool white light is perfect for spaces where high visibility is essential, Sally recommends using adjustable lighting to avoid the harshness it can sometimes create. "Our models with customisable settings allow you to transition between cool and warm lighting, providing versatility without sacrificing the quality of your mirror experience," she explains.
Which Lighting Colour is Right for You?
Choosing the right lighting for your bathroom mirrors is about more than just aesthetic appeal, it's about matching your lifestyle and needs. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:
- For a relaxing soak or evening routine: Choose warm white lighting for a soothing, spa like atmosphere.
- For daily grooming and skincare: Neutral white is your best choice for accurate, natural light.
- For detailed tasks like makeup or precision grooming: opt for cool white or daylight for maximum clarity.
Or why not have the best of all worlds? With mirrors like our Briella or Forma cabinet, you can seamlessly adjust between all three light temperatures to create the perfect environment, no matter your mood or task.
