Essential Oils in the Bath: The Benefits and How to Use Them Safely
Aromatherapy baths are relaxing, holistic and a great way to unwind (especially in our Angelo Freestanding Bath). Using essential oils in the bath can promote health and well-being, something we could all do with more of. But where does it come from? And how can you use aromatherapy to create a relaxing bathing experience like no other?
Where does aromatherapy come from?
Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years. Aromatic plant components were used for medicinal and religious purposes in Ancient cultures in China, India, Egypt and elsewhere, and were known to have physical and psychological benefits. However, the term “aromatherapy” wasn’t coined until 1937, when French perfumer and chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé. Nowadays, they are used as stress-relievers.
How can I use aromatherapy in the bath?
We’ve established that essential oils can make your bathing experience much more luxurious, so do you just add a few drops to the bath and hop in? Absolutely not. Essential oils are insoluble, so when you pour them directly into the bath, they will not mix in, but adhere to your skin and the sides of the bath.
However, this can be easily combatted by combining essential oils with a carrier oil first. You can disperse essential oils in carrier oils such as coconut, olive, sunflower, or jojoba. This way, you won’t end up having essential oil adhering to the side of your bath. The Londra Double-Ended Bath is popular with people wanting the ultimate spacious relaxing bathing experience.
